At JSM, a leading utility infrastructure provider, our success hinges on talented people who push boundaries, nurture others,  and deliver outstanding results across multi-utility, power infrastructure engineering, and telecoms infrastructure projects day after day. Few embody those qualities better than Louise Amphlett, our longest-serving commercial team member and the only female Quantity Surveyor in the business.

Over the past twelve years, Louise has risen from an entry-level administrative post to become one of our most trusted commercial leads, guiding multi-million-pound power-infrastructure projects and inspiring colleagues across civil engineering and digital infrastructure at every stage of their careers.

How does perseverance turn into long-term career progress at JSM?

Louise started with JSM as a Technical Assistant and progressed to a fully qualified Quantity Surveyor due to perseverance, hard work, and dedication. Her quality of work is exemplary.

Louise’s career trajectory is proof that grit and ambition open doors within engineering. In 2015, already juggling demanding project duties, she enrolled part-time at university to pursue a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying. Five years later, she graduated with First-Class honours, having gained hands-on experience every step of the way. That blend of academic excellence and real-world know-how now underpins her leadership on complex frameworks for key clients.

How do we deliver commercial certainty across critical infrastructure projects?
Whether overseeing live site changes or negotiating variations, Louise is relentless in protecting project value across our full turnkey services:

  • Proactive change management – Meticulous capture of on-site variations ensures accurate, timely client communication and approval
  • Robust risk management – Clear processes minimise commercial exposure and safeguard margins
  • Data-driven forecasting – Louise’s operational tracker, adopted company-wide, now monitors every project from award to final payment

The results speak for themselves: strengthened stakeholder trust and repeat business with blue-chip clients across civil engineering, utility services, and infrastructure provider frameworks, amongst others.

How do diversity and new ideas drive better outcomes in infrastructure delivery?

“Diversity of thought plays a huge role in creating a thriving workplace, particularly when the workplace changes month on month or even week on week due to the operational nature of our business. Louise plays a pivotal role in providing innovative solutions across our project portfolio.” Constance Dickie, Corporate Affairs Director, JSM Group

In a traditionally male-dominated sector spanning civil engineering, electrical engineering, and telecoms infrastructure, Louise’s presence challenges norms and enriches decision-making. Her ability to look at entrenched problems from a different angle has unlocked more efficient delivery models, leaner reporting cycles, and collaborative commercial-operational workflows that benefit every stakeholder, from on-site teams to board-level sponsors.

Why is development important at every stage of a career at JSM?

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Louise throughout her journey at JSM, from her early days as a Commercial Administrator to her current role as a lead Quantity Surveyor. At each stage, she’s shown an unwavering commitment to growth and excellence. It’s been incredibly rewarding to support her development over the years, and now to see her mentoring others with the same care and dedication. Louise is a brilliant example of how investing in people at every stage of their career pays dividends for the whole business.” Jack Whitlock, Associate Director – Electrical Operations, JSM Group

Louise believes talent grows fastest when knowledge is shared. She actively mentors graduate surveyors, apprentices, and newly-hired commercial staff, tailoring one-to-one sessions on contract law, cost forecasting, and negotiation. Colleagues credit her calm, approachable style with accelerating their confidence and competence.

How is JSM preparing for the future of utility infrastructure?
As JSM scales its power-infrastructure portfolio and renewable energy connections, to meet Britain’s net-zero ambitions, Louise’s expertise will be instrumental in translating strategic vision into sustainable, commercially sound delivery across utility infrastructure frameworks.

Her story, of continual self-investment, innovation, and inclusive leadership, mirrors the culture we strive to cultivate across our organisation.

Thank you, Louise, for showing what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity.
