2786 – Utility Surveyor (Tracer)

To survey the highways and other ground structures for buried underground utilities to prevent damage from forthcoming excavations and other works which may have the potential to break ground.

To ensure that areas of excavation have been thoroughly surveyed in conjunction with the provided utility drawings. To work proactively with all levels of management, so to establish and maintain a safe system of work and a safe environment for colleagues and clients.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a similar role and fully competent using RD equipment.
  • It is essential that you have previous experience locating utility apparatus and that you are able to read and understand drawings to a high standard.
  • Must be qualified with NRSWA and CSCS and/or EUSR (core) accreditation.
  • You should be fully proficient in Microsoft Office packages and hold a full valid UK driving licence.
  • Good spoken and written communication skills.
  • A tactful but assertive and professional manner.
  • Logical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to understand and interpret relevant legal requirements.
  • Trustworthiness and discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Self-motivated but able to work as part of a team.
  • Proficient use of C.A.T & Genny (ECAT4+/GCAT4+ as a minimum) and understanding and interpreting Utility Drawings.
  • Minimum 3 years highways and/or utilities experience in a utility marking capacity.
  • Street Works qualification (minimum unit 1-3).
  • Competent in Word and Excel.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Shall familiarise yourself with the company’s policies, procedures and site rules and adhere with the requirement within.
  • Ensure that ALL avoidance equipment which has been provided for the roll is regularly inspected and is kept within calibration and service regimes.
  • Sample surveys of C.A.T. & Genny data from site teams.
  • Ensure survey data is recorded and downloaded and filed.
  • At all times and/or where practicable, liaise and involve team leaders and line management in identifying underground utilities and to highlight to them areas where known shallow, high voltage, mains, cellars, vaults etc, exist.
  • Ensure proposed and/or excavated routes have been thoroughly surveyed in conjunction with the utility drawings and ALL identified utilities marked accordingly.
  • Responsible for locating existing underground utilities using RD equipment prior to excavation works.
  • Not to engage in conflict with any member of staff, contractors and/or members of the public. Should a situation arise which you feel is threatening, leave site and contact your line manager immediately. Remember!! You are representing JSM and our clients, always remain calm and professional.
  • Liaise with the project management team with your findings from the sites of which you surveyed.
  • Inspect the teams Utility Drawings to ensure that they are in-date (no more than 3 months old from date of issue).
  • Ensure the team have considered how their works impact on the public i.e. are we working over underground cellars/basements, noise, dust, parking of plant & equipment, storage of materials etc.
  • Where serious breaches have been identified ensure that both the project management team and the SHEQ Manager and/or Director are informed immediately. Where it is evident that there is a risk to life or imminent danger STOP the works.
  • Discharge your specific duties for matters regarding health, safety, welfare, environment and quality as defined in the company policy and in any procedures, efficiently and effectively.
  • Set a good personal example, wearing the required protective equipment for the site you are entering.
  • Shall be accountable to the Operations Manager in respect of health, safety, quality and environmental matters.
  • Responsible for exercising a general duty of care for the health, safety, environmental, quality and welfare of employees.
  • Notify changes in your duties to all others who may be affected by such changes.
  • Promote the reporting of near misses throughout the company.
