JSM has been appointed by a well established Telecoms provider to deliver a whole infrastructure network in Essex.
Delivery and Approach
Phase 1 comprised a whole range of activities including new civils build, BT Openreach PIA installation in duct and overhead, new cabinets and customer connection (Toby) boxes.
Specifically, Phase 1 included the delivery of:
- 6 separate New Business Units (NBU) and 1 trunk cable section
- 6,198.5m of civils works including multiway microduct and 96mm primary ducts for multiway subduct installation
- 23 new cabinet bases and cabinet installations
- 15,072m of PIA Underground Cable of different sizes and capacity microducts
- 850m of PIA Overhead cabling
- A total of 568 Toby boxes
29,645m Cabling in total to enable future connection of up to 2021 residences.
JSM adapted to exacting client’s demanding reporting criteria, including daily reporting to the client to monitor progress and programme. JSM also raised the PIA orders on the BTOR portal on behalf of the client, taking responsibility for the initial route order, network adjustments, whereabouts of closing out of the PIA orders. JSM has brought benefit and efficiencies to the client by recording the whole build on GPS to assist with closing the build sections down quickly.
Challenges and Solutions
- Divergences between Client’s streetworks permitting expectations and what the Local Authority would allow. JSM kept a constant dialogue with Local authority and client to bring acceptable compromises.
- Changes to design during planning and build phases. JSM built some float in the programme so that the design changes caused no substantial delays.
- Installation challenges regarding a non standard specified subduct product. JSM successfully installed the unusual subduct though it required additional works.
