Delivery and Approach

The route is approximately 7km long and went through busy public highways, fields, verges, footways and tracks across the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham and Havering. The scope of the project included all excavation works, cable installation, jointing and testing of the 132kV cables.

JSM carried out their route design verification to fully appraise themselves of the scheme and its requirements along with verifying all surface types and identifying areas of traffic sensitivity and Special Engineering Difficulties (SEDS) together with proposed alternative routes to over congested areas whenever possible.

JSM provided a fully managed service liaising and working with all affected stakeholders and the Local Authorities.

The Challenges

The route presented 4 main (SEDs) requiring alternative method of excavations including HDD at the Beam River crossing West of Upper Rainham Road, The HDD location was also the section containing historical landfill requiring site-based surveys and reports to determine the type and age of the landfill, the capping material and depth, possible contamination levels, existing gas levels and ground stability, etc.

SED no 2 At Hacton Bridge, trial holes revealed that there was insufficient cover on the bridge.  An alternative was found by a using a cable bridge instead.

Extensive stakeholder management with LB Barking and Dagenham to agree traffic management including road closures and other measures while minimising whenever possible disruption to the road users.
