JSM were contracted by a major telecoms client to prove, design, construct and install a 48 fibre cable between Birmingham and Cofton Data Centres.
The route length in total extended to 30.3km of fibre and ducted in 26km of 1-way duct.
We designed the complete route and decided to directional drill the majority to minimize disruption to local residents, business and local communities as a whole.
The installation included over 30 Special Engineering Difficulties (SED’s) including Network Rail and both medium and high pressure gas mains. JSM approached each challenge with the usual individual care, thought and innovative solutions.
One major challenge was the Grand Union Canal crossing which after detailed survey and inspection gave that the bridge structure was too weak to support a cable crossing. Topographic and Geometric surveys were carried out and two bore holes, 17 metres deep and 14 metres deep, were dug facilitating a horizontal drill. After gaining permission and guidance from the Canal & Rivers Trust we successfully drilled under the canal bridge, canal basin and towpaths at a depth of 5 metres.
